Trip Report

Murhut Falls — Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
This is apparently the obligatory shot for this trip report. :)
Road is fine for all vehicles and free of snow. There are a few branches down (pushed to the sides) and minor potholes, but nothing troublesome. There’s no privy at this trailhead, so you might want to stop at the trail signed “Ranger Hole” just before the Duckabush road turns to gravel. There’s a nice privy there, even stocked with TP and Purell. I also posted a TR for Ranger Hole trail today. The short trail to Murhut Falls is in excellent shape. The trail fairies must have been out to clear the log reported last time (was it you, wonderful Mt. Rose Trail Crew?). We had the trail to ourselves on a cold (high 20s), sunny Tuesday. The log at the bottom of the falls is lined with icicles underneath that sparkle when the sun reflects off the water. I posted some pics (including 2 nearby trails) at the link below.

Where you adventuresome enough to cross to the other side of the falls on that giant log - if it is still there.

Last time I was there I saw two people do it way up above the falls.

Looked a little crazy. Then when one of the people almost slipped off the log it looked way more crazy.

It was pure ice out there. Then again, I'm always up for a swim. :) Now you've given me an idea for spring when the falls are really raging - thanks!

Crazy, but if you do it let me know and I'll bring the camera. Would make an awesome shot.
