A little fog at the trail head was just a challenge and incentive to go higher. So off we went on a cold winter morning heading up the south ridge of the Umtanum Canyon.
Soon the fog thinned and became a blanket below us covering the Yakima River and parts of the surrounding hills. The trail was frozen but we make good time until we hit a "warm spot" where the ice had thawed into a thin layer of mud. This required some fancy footwork in the steeper areas but soon enough we were back on frozen trail. The view opened up to include Mt Stuart and the Enchantments area. Arriving at the summit there was 360 degrees of wonderful views including Mt Rainier and Adams. Frost on the sagebrush and grass added a special effect. Winter brings out surprising color and beauty to this shrub-steppe landscape. A light snack and it was time to head down. We "stepped lightly" in the areas where the trail was muddy.
A perfect winter morning hike in the Yakima Canyon.

Cascadian Kim, you're awesome!
Birdman, I really really like the fog photo! Fun to see this - I recommended this hike to a lady who just moved to Yakima; she has 2 little kids that she wants to introduce to The Outdoors. Hopefully she'll see this trip report! It will inspire for sure!

Thanks for reminding me how special that area is. I relocated to the westside years ago. We've got some pretty special places over here too!

Wow! I love the pic of the fog in the canyon. Thanks for sharing. How do you get to Wymer Ridge?

After crossing the Umptanum Cr bridge and going under the railroad track, you will see a trail heading off to the left. This will lead you to the top of Wymer Ridge at about 2.4 miles and 2100'of gain (some sections fairly steep). There are some fine views here-Adam, Rainier, Stuart. You can either return to the trailhead or head west toward what we call the Wymer Towers (telephone microwave site). A round trip from the trailhead to the towers is roughly 11 miles. You may see deer, elk, and possibly a coyote and at times the flowers are beautiful. Enjoy!
