North Fork Sauk River, Painted Mountain (Red Mountain) & Monte Cristo Ghost Town — Friday, Feb. 6, 2015

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Washout along FS 49 on the way towards the North Fork Sauk TH. It was no problem to drive over this, but with the steady rain I figured it'd get worse throughout the day. Decided not to chance it.
Today I attempted to drive to the trailhead for the North Fork Sauk River/Red Mountain trail. On my way up the Mountain Loop (from Darrington), I noticed that the Sauk was running very high. I turned up FS 49 and made it within 1-2 miles of the trailhead. As I was driving, I crossed two different sections of road that were underwater. At the time, it was no problem to get my Highlander through the water. However, I knew it would be raining hard all day, and I wasn't sure what those crossings would look like on my way home, so I decided to turn around and try a different trail. After getting denied at the North Fork of the Sauk, I headed further up the Mtn Loop towards Barlow Pass, where I checked out the wagon road to Monte Cristo. The log that normally allows you to cross the South Fork of the Sauk (on your way to Monte Cristo) is partially submerged, and my guess is that it will be fully submerged by the end of today. Ultimately I ended up cobbling together ~8 miles by doing brief out-and-backs on the following trails: Barlow Pass, Old Government, Monte Cristo, Weeden Creek, and misc FS roads. It was dumping rain the entire time and the route wasn't exactly inspiring, but any day in the mountains is still better than a day not spent in the mountains. As I drove down the Mountain Loop towards Granite Falls, the South Fork of the Stillaguamish was also running very high. It will be interesting to see how the mountain roads fare with these weekend rains!
Another washout along FS-49. Again, easy to navigate at it's current level, but I assume it will only get worse as the rain comes down.
The log bridge across the South Fork of the Sauk along the Monte Cristo wagon road. No-go.

You can be that old if you understood how to up load it. Click on the picture and open up up fill size in your computer or if you have it on an sd card do the same. You should have a edit put to roatate it at that time by right clicking on your mouse. Once you figure this out save it and it will stay that way. The go back on like and log into your WTA account and select the report then select edit. go down to that picture and you will have and option to replace it. just replace over it and save your report. Your done!!. Good Luck. P.S. I love the waterfall off F/S-49 especially after a rain. Its usually raging. Go back there when you get a chance or check it out on my you tube channel at "lmm3181" and you can see a video of the falls or videos of over 300 other hikes in Washington State.

"any day in the mountains is still better than a day not spent in the mountains."
I really like urban hiking and riding my bike. Way better than spending half my day driving my car around the mountains. Not very green friendly either..

Or, to each his own. I agree that any day in the mountains is better than a day not spent in the mountains, and the green friendly thing is for each to consider and decide for themselves. I appreciated the report.
