Trip Report

Umtanum Creek Canyon — Tuesday, Mar. 31, 2015

Central Washington > Yakima
FLOWERS ARE HERE!!! Today I visited the Yakima Canyon to check in on the wildflowers. The drive through the canyon alone is gorgeous with tons of balsalmroot and green hills. I hiked up the hill on the north side of the Umtanum Creek mouth. I hiked up the steep trail on the left along the ridge nose, then down the other trail on the right. No point in hiking further on the ridge top because the flowers fade away once the trail hits the ridge crest. Tons of balsalmroot and some nice patches of lupine with a lot more flowers still to come at least through the first half of April.

Thanks for the TR, mOuNtAiNeEr51. You convinced me to check this hike out for myself, and am currently, in fact, headed that way tomorrow. Question: I'm contemplating whether to bring a wide-angle lens, or a standard 35 mm - which of these will bring the scenery justice? I'd like my camera outfit to be light but if I fall short of capturing something spectacular, then I'd probably cry for a week.
