Trip Report

Alger Alp (South Route) — Saturday, Apr. 4, 2015

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
At the Trailhead
The description of the trail says 4 miles round trip but it's actually a little longer to get to the top. There are some forks in the road that are not well marked as to where they are. On the way down we followed a fork and found ourselves on the way to Squires Lake, which we decided to save for another day. With a couple detours like that we ended up walking 7.8 miles. The path was well kept up and, while it wasn't as interesting as some of the trails, it was nice. The view at the top was a great perspective of that drive down I-5 toward Mt. Vernon that we all have taken many times. It put the freeway into perspective and showed how sparsely populated the area around Alger is. The elevation markers were helpful but otherwise there was no real signage. Even the trailhead was not marked. It just said "Private Road" and we had to make an assumption that it was the trailhead. All in all, though, a hidden gem that I imagine gets much less traffic than other trails.
At 1400 Feet. Mary Ellen looks more energized. I look less.
