Big Four Ice Caves — Saturday, Jul. 4, 2015

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Even during one of the hottest summers on record, the ice caves remain. While they are dangerous when too close due to constantly melting, they are quite an amazing sight to see.

Just a reminder to stay well away from the caves!! There was a collapse today (July 6) and people were inside (this after a collapse with close calls just two days ago). There's not much information yet, but today multiple people were injured and at least one was airlifted from the site. Please believe the signs and stay far, far back.

Due to the accident on July 6, the caves are now closed. One person is dead, four injured. This accident comes 5 years after the death of Grace Tam. Despite posted warnings, people still continued to go into the caves.

Here's an unfortunate comment from one bystander at the scene of the accident:

"It was extremely gruesome, honestly," said Jakubowski, who suffered scratches and other minor injuries. She said she saw the warning signs outside but went in anyway, adding she didn't see anything that seemed to point toward a collapse, and others already were in the cave.

The signs were everywhere. Hot weather = melting ice. Anyone that can't understand that shouldn't be out there.
