We wanted an easy afternoon walk in the woods today that would accommodate both the children and the dogs and give them a place to burn some energy without working too hard. Old Sauk River is the perfect trail for this. In most areas the trail is wide enough for both dogs to walk abreast, and as there are no drop offs and the ground is mostly flat, there was plenty of room for us to pull over to allow other hikers to pass. The kids enjoyed the mossy old trees, abundant ferns, and peek-a-boo views of the river. The dogs loved the abundant interesting smells, soft trail surface, and thick shade. The combination of nearby water and heavy trees make this an ideal hike for a warm afternoon, and even though we were often jogging on the trial, we did not get too hot. The only down side of the whole trip was that we saw more mosquitoes than we've run in to anywhere else all summer. Even with all the rain we had this week, the trail was dry and perfect for kids and dogs alike.
