Rampart Ridge Loop — Sunday, May. 8, 2016

Mount Rainier Area > SW - Longmire/Paradise
We hiked the Rampart Ridge with the family yesterday and man, it was gorgeous. There are 2 entrances to the trail-one across the street from the Longmire Museum and another across from the Longmire Inn. The second (across from the Inn) veers off from the Trail of The Shadows and we missed the turnoff the first time as the small brown sign blends in at knee level quite well. If you chose this route, be on the lookout for the trail sign after you cross a small bridge and the main trail goes right...Rampart Ridge will be up and to your left. This was a great trail, however this is the more difficult way up with many many switchbacks and a lot of steep uphill. The second entrance, across from the museum offers stairs and a more gradual climb. We hiked with a 5 year old and a 2 year old in our pack and they did fine. Our 5 year old has been hiking for some time so she is well seasoned already :) The views are amazing...but go beyond the viewpoint lookout and you will see even better views of Mt Rainier through a small clearing in the trees. Take the whole loop for a hike of almost 5.5 miles and enjoy the gradual descent with many views of streams and a nice wide trail. Parking was great the the Inn and there are bathrooms, a small restaurant, and water. A nice day hike you shouldn't miss!
