Unless you're confident in your navigational skills, I would recommend waiting a few more weeks before exploring this trail. Also, the road has some very deep potholes and washboarding right now. This is definitely a road for high clearance vehicles only.
About .6 miles before the trailhead, there is still deep, slushy snow on the road. We parked the car and walked the remaining distance. Once we reached the trail, we only made it about 1/3 of a mile on the trail before turning around and heading back. The trail is pretty much completely obscured by snow and we didn't have a map or GPS. We decided to turn around instead of wandering aimlessly over the snow fields.
We ran into some cross-country skiers on their way up the trail as we were walking back to the car. They seemed much better equipped to enjoy the trail in its current condition.
