I hadn't been up to Monte Cristo in over 30 years and with the trail now open, my son and I decided to check it out. My only disappointment was that the trees had grown and blocked most of the mountain views to the SE from the old Monte Cristo site. However, you still get nice mountain views as you hike into the site. And the mountains to the north are still in good view. The trip reports posted earlier are very detailed, so I don't have anything to add. Only one thing worth mentioning .... I wouldn't take small children on this hike. There is one potentially dangerous river crossing where you have to walk on a log. The log is large, but it's still scary to navigate and would be slippery if wet.
