Trip Report
Golden Horn - Snowy Lakes — Friday, Jul. 1, 2016
North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Started at Eagle Creek TH.
Upper Eagle Lake was frigid. Bugs, Bees, and Horse Flies. EEK!
Beautiful scenery!
The second day we headed over Horse Head Pass and around boiling lake through some lovely meadows and up Angels Staircase. We had called ahead to the ranger and were told the weather was great and the trail was snow free but there was still a good bit of snow on the way down to Cooney lake. We made it but had some difficulty finding the trail. Once we did it was easy going. The winds were extremely strong. It was very very cold and fire wood was sparse.
The next morning on the way out we planned to take 429 to Martin lakes. Be careful at the junction there are 2 trails called 429 both heading down one loops back toward Martin lakes and Eagle Creek TH. The other goes towards Foggy Dew and Surprise lake...if you are doing the loop go left!
Beautiful loop, colder than expected, little bit of snow, a few trees down, some annoying bugs, lots of flowers and fun wildlife- beaver, deer, marmots! Yay for hiking. (NOTE- there were some motorcycles at Cooney Lake)
