Trip Report

Wellington Ghost Town — Sunday, Jul. 17, 2016

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West
Went up to the Ghost Town and had the best time! unfortunately the OLD CASCADE TUNNEL IS CLOSED which takes away a great portion of the remnants of Wellington town. I hope that WTA tries to get a trail around the unsafe tunnel soon as I would love to come back and see more. With that being said it was a beautiful hike that was extremely informative about history. With info boxes about every quarter mile you will learn everything about the town that once hailed here. Several waterfalls, and one pretty creepy tunnel at the end of the trail. Had lunch on the way back from the trail at some park benches that overlook the forest. Very passable. I think you could potentially take a stroller here. Still a little wet but August could be a good time for that. Fine for dogs. Directions: Head E on US 2 if coming from Seattle. Turn off is pretty much unmarked for Tye Road. Road is manageable, but if there are any big rains I would skip this trip. Head on Tye Road for about 3 Miles. Turn right (this is unmarked and it is a sharp turn) head on this road for about 1 mile, you will find the parking lot. Head east to see the closed tunnel to the town. Keep in mind it is closed so there isn't a ton to see right now until a trail is built to bypass it. Head west on iron goat trail for pretty hike through the old railway. For more info turn off on mile post 55 for the head of the iron goat trail (several poster boards are here). An old train is here so would be good if your kid likes trains. Also coffee on the way back was $8 for three people, and we got lattees. Money saver!

I don't know what you were expecting or where you got your information, but the Wellington trailhead IS the old Wellington townsite. One of the annoying features of an avalanche is it wipes out everything in its path. The town was never rebuilt. The Stevens Pass sewer plant is at the other end of the tunnel. Not a destination hike in my book. There are about 13 miles of trail and 3 trailheads = Wellington, Scenic, and Martin Creek - that follow the old railroad grade. The brochures at the sign-in registers have a map of the trail system.
