Goat Ridge, Snowgrass Flat & Heart Lake via Lily Basin Trail — Tuesday, Jul. 19, 2016

South Cascades > Goat Rocks

Dangerous but doable. Spent the first day hiking up to Cispus Basin first across the Bypass trail then crossed the 96 back. The trail was in great condition, few downed trees but easy to manage pass. The first obstacle we ran in to was the snow fields up at Goat Lake. This place is still pretty frozen solid. We spent the night up on the only clear campsite and I must say pack for cold weather. The temperature dropped down to 30 degrees at night and that was with no wind. We did see a ton of goats on the ridges though. So from Goat Lake to Jordan Basin it gets pretty dangerous with ice and snow over about 10 spots with sheer drop offs. I would recommend trekking poles and some sort of tracton devices for your shoes, I used Yak Trax and they worked pretty well. From Jordan Basin on the trail returned back to great conditions.

Wow we called the ranger district for the area last week and they said it was snow free at Goat Lake. Not so? Was planning to go there this weekend. But not if it's snow covered.

That's what they told me as well but I'm glad I brought some crampons. But no one has been leaving trip reports so I made sure I did

Thanks. I guess we'll go to snow grass flats instead. Hoping the lower elevation is snow free.

Do you have any idea what the condition of the PCT was further north through the goat rocks, up along Old Snowy Mountain. I am looking to backpack from goat rocks to White Pass this weekend but cannot get information regarding the PCT. We have no specialized gear for snow besides trekking poles... If they count as specialized gear.

Thanks!

From what I heard from some others is that it still had quite a bit a snow up to Old Snowy, even more than Goat Lake. You can always rent crampons from Next Adventure or I bought Yaktrax from REI for $20
