Trip Report

Silver Star Mountain — Tuesday, May. 9, 2017

Southwest Washington > Lewis River Region

Silver Star via Rock Creek Camp and DNR 180C This is a great alternative track to the Sunset Falls north access and the more-than-challenging road to the TH. DNR roads to this TH are quite easy for a 2WD vehicle.

Directions to Parking/Trail Head:

  • Mile 0.0 Rock Creek Campground on NE Dole Valley Rd
  • 0.2 Left on L1200 0.8 Left on L1200
  • 0.9 Yellow DNR open gate on L1200
  • 1.5 Right on L1200A 2.8 Bear left on L1200A
  • 2.9 Bear right on L1200A 3.3 Bear left on L1200A
  • 4.0 Straight/right on L1200A
  • 4.2 Park at intersection (45.7589, -122.3065)

The TH is to the south and is a continuation of L1200A. It becomes a hi-clearance, 4WD narrow Jeep road. See the attached .gpx track to navigate L1200A until it becomes DNR180C near Sturgeon Rock. Ignore my "wandering around" at the 1.0 mile mark on my .gpx track. I need to remember to "pause" my gaiagps recording! A link to my gaiagps track is attached. I found solid snow pack at 3600 ft. but it was consolidated and tracked. No snow shoes needed. It might be icy after an overnight freeze. The Silver Star summit was clear of snow.

Thanks for the suggested alternate route. I'm unable to access your GPS data, it appears to be set to private. I looked up the coordinates you suggested for parking. How long of a hike was it from there to the top of Silver Star Mountain?

Sorry. Just toggled gaia folder to public. You should now be able to see track and photos. I would estimate 1.5 hrs without stops. As mentioned I did encounter packed snow at about 3600 ft.

This route is sadly no longer available. The gate at L1210 is permanently locked, which adds 10 miles total to the route (5 up and 5 back) in addition to the 2 miles each way from the posted beginning point in this post. With 14 miles total, it is easier to just do the standard route from the Grouse Vista trailhead.
