Trip Report

Packwood Lake — Saturday, Jun. 24, 2017

South Cascades > Goat Rocks

Wanted a short overnight backpacking trip for some first timers and Packwood Lake was a great introduction!

We left Seattle a little after 8 and arrived at the trailhead around 10:30 to a fairly full parking lot, though there was still ample space. We passed several groups leaving, so I think the amount of space fluctuates throughout the day. In any case, we had no problem finding a spot.

Nothing much to say about the trail itself. If you follow the directions on WTA you'll be fine. It's a pretty easy trail and there were plenty of people day hiking it. We stayed at the first campsite when you cross over the bridge up on an elevated spot. It was a good spot for 3 tents with a fire pit and plenty of room to move around.

Bugs were a nuisance the whole time. We didn't notice them much when we first arrived because there was a nice breeze to keep them away, but as the day moved into night and the following morning they were pretty persistent. I have something like 30 bites, but the rest of my group escaped relatively unscathed (they're welcome!).

All told, my GPS recorded 8.2 miles roundtrip which took us 2:48 with 895 feet of total ascent across it. Would highly recommend this to new and old backpackers alike!
