Encouraged by the nice weather, I decided to make the drive up the Sultan Basin to have a look at the Greider Lakes. The first two miles of the hike follow a decommissioned road. Having never been there before, I thought I might be able to ride my bike up to the beginning of the DNR Trail, but it turns out that bikes are not permitted even on the initial two mile approach walk...oh well! There are several small “dipsy-doodle” stream crossings along the way and a couple of bigger crossings, but neither presented any real difficulty.
The trail is clearly marked, and the climb up the 40 switchbacks wasn’t too bad. There are a few small wash-outs and blow-downs that could use some TLC, but they were all easy to negotiate. The short walk from Little Greider up to Big Greider is the one part of the upper trail that broke into the open and let me catch some welcome warm sun. Most of the uphill trail is in pretty thick forest. Enjoyed lunch on the outlet driftwood, then headed back down.
