Chehalis River Discovery Trail — Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018

Southwest Washington > Lewis River Region
Chehalis River Discovery Trail view (lolohikes photo)

This is a lovely midwinter hike when you don't have time or inclination to head for snow-covered high country. It's about five minutes off I-5, has plenty of parking, and is essentially flat. The views are great--you may spot Mount Rainier at the northern end of the trail--and you are likely to see the pair of bald eagles that nest in a tree across the river. We watched one of them hunting above the rainwater pond in a field adjacent to the river (see blog post link below for full story).

We saw a dozen or so people, and at least that many dogs, all of whom were leashed and well-behaved (thank you, considerate dog owners!). A nice way to stretch your legs in the rainy season. Thanks to the Chehalis River Basin Land Trust and Lewis County for making this trail happen!
