Trip Report

Lower South Fork Skokomish River — Saturday, Mar. 24, 2018

Olympic Peninsula > Olympia

Olympia High school's hiking club did an overnight this weekend, and it was a great trip! The road has some pot holes, but any car could get around them. The trail was mainly in good condition, but there were a few short stretches of mud and fallen trees to manuever around. There was also a sprinkling of snow on the ground in some areas, but no ice or snow on the trail and definitely nothing that you would need any extra gear for up to camp comfort. After that the snow gets deep enough to be impassable without snowshoes. My group stayed at camp comfort. We spent a while wandering around the riverbank, made a fire, and enjoyed a slightly cold night in the wide-open sandy area. We did wake up to a thick layer of frost on the outside of our tent, so make sure to be prepared for cold weather at night, even if it's sunny and warm in the day!

Julia: Thanks for your trail report-I am considering this same trip as a beginner backpack for my Girl Scouts. Can you tell me more about the amenities of Camp Comfort: space for 5 bp tents? Privy? Water source-creek or river? Trees for food cache hangs? ~Ellen

Yeah it's a really good group spot for beginners! There are many wide open spaces on gravel/sand, so you'd for sure be able to find places for five tents. There's no bathroom, but I just brought a trowel and told everyone the LNT rules of wilderness pooing. The river is easily accessible, so yes there's water! There are trees nearby, so I'm sure you could do a hang fairly easily, but we just used bear cans so I couldn't tell you for certain. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks Juli---yup our group practices good LNT potty techniques...including carrying out the used TP in a coffee bag...great for masking odors on overnights!!
