Trip Report

Baker Lake - Maple Grove — Saturday, Apr. 21, 2018

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area

I went on my first overnight backpacking trip (Saturday to Sunday) on the Baker Lake trail with my coworker, his wife, and their 7 year old daughter. We stopped at the first camp site and did a quick day trip in the direction of the second site but didn't quite make it before someone decided it was time to turn around and have lunch.

The hike was pretty easy, fairly level, and free of any obstacles for the first leg of the journey to the campsite. There wasn't much mud and all the bridges were intact. In the second leg there's a substantial tree down over the trail, but it was fairly easy to get around. There were also a few trees across the path in the camping area, but they were fairly easy to duck under. Camping area was in great condition and included a pretty fancy (for backpacking) toilet and plenty of bear boxes for you food.

There wasn't a ton of parking at the trailhead, but there's enough parking along the road that I didn't see anyone turning back. We were lucky the weather was nice and while things were still a bit wet there wasn't unreasonable amounts of mud or anything washed out. I would definitely do it again and recommend it to others.
