This is possibly my favorite day hike in the Spokane region. It is only as short drive from downtown Spokane, and even closer if you're coming from Spokane Valley. The distance (5 miles) is ideal for getting outside for a few hours, but it doesn't require me to commit more than a morning or afternoon so I can schedule other activities. It also provides moderate elevation gain to get the heart rate up and break a sweat (something that some of my other favorites in Riverside State Park don't really offer). The trail is well-signed and easy to navigate. Best of all, the Rocks of Sharon provide a great midway point for a snack or meal alongside some epic views of the Palouse.
The trail was in great condition, but slightly muddy along the Iller Creek portion. I hiked the trail counter-clockwise today as it was a bit hot and the trail along Iller Creek is shaded. The wildflowers are starting to pop!
I probably hike this a dozen times a year, and usually ascend clockwise so I can enjoy the views on my way up. After reaching the Rocks of Sharon and beginning the descent towards Iller Creek, I prefer to take the trail at the junction that leads back to the ridge line rather than going back down along Iller Creek. This adds a little more distance to the hike (roughly a mile), but still feels like a loop and lets me enjoy the views on the way down. If you live in the region and haven't experienced this trail yet, make sure you get out and do it. If you're visiting, this is a great option to enjoy a trail with some amazing views of Eastern Washington.
