The Hobbit Trail. photo by j brink

We began at the wooden overlook platform with a view of the beach and Port Susan and then walked along the dike with constant sight of the shoreline on one side and the ponds and channel on the other side. As you pass by the channel look for the beaver dam which appears to be in progress. Some of the branches used for building material are still sprouting green leaves. At the end of the dike the trail goes left into the forest where it was much cooler and active with mosquitoes. At the sign for the Hobbit Trail we went left where the trail is close in this time of year with dense tall grass and weeds on both sides before emerging out in the open where a footbridge crosses the channel. From there we had a close up view of the beaver dam and then went on to the Hobbit Trail. This is a short otherworldly path through living tunnels of trees before emerging into what seems like overly bright sun again.

Overall the trail is in good condition. The area of beach in front of the overlook platform was under a couple inches of water but to the north it is much dryer. The trail in the forest can be pretty muddy after a rain but today it was fairly dry.
