For those that like solitude in a hike, this trail is for you. I arrived at the access road to the trailhead about 9:15 in the morning, and was the only one there. Throughout the day I only saw one other hiker, off in the distance. For me, it was hiker heaven.
I checked the box on road conditions to indicate recommended for high clearance vehicles. The first .5 miles in is probably doable for most vehicles. Anything after the gate is rough, complete with potholes, and deep trenches. Having done this hike in the past, I knew it was "questionable" so I elected to walk the 1.3 miles to the trailhead. Just beware....
Today I hiked up the access road to the trailhead, continues through the canyon past the cabin, and then chose, at the first Y junction, the route to the right, hiking through the pines. This is such a nice section, scenery somewhat different than the rest of the hike. I did hike the bulk of the ridge trail, until I came to an access road down, maybe about a mile or so on the ridge, so worth it! The wildflowers are everywhere. it was a bit windy topside, but not cold. This trail down is open, without the pines that were found on the way up. Lots of vistas of rolling hills, very pretty!
Trail is in great shape, with lots of wildflowers in bloom, some have yet to peak. I found so many butterflies and moths, literally hundreds of them, along most of the trail. I even found several horned lizards, at least I think that it what they were. No rattle snakes that I could see, but I do believe I heard a warning rattle as I was near the trailhead. I did not go and investigate. And.... no ticks!
Been a great day on an old familiar, favorite hiking spot.
