Humpback Mountain — Monday, May. 28, 2018

Snoqualmie Region > Snoqualmie Pass

This is an unmaintained trail but in good condition once you find the start of it.   From the roadside parking area at the WTA coordinates, you follow a closed logging road.   Once the road goes around the nose of the ridge, continuing on about 1/4 mile and looking to your right for a dirt slide descending from forest.   Follow a boot path up into the forest and you will pick up the trail.   I missed this turn-off and wound up on a stretch of the road that trees are reclaiming.   I mistakenly followed ribbons up the hillside past extensive holes dug by crystal miners.  This was much steeper than staying on the trail I found on the descent and required so backtracking after climbing 500' up - so if you encounter an overgrown portion of the road turn around and look for the boot path.

Once in the forest the trail climbs and trends slightly right as it heads up the ridge.  After about 500' of climbing, you cross another old logging road and continue on the boot path up the ridge.  You now continue up another 2100' on an obvious trail.

There are occasional blow downs but the path winds around them.   Towards the top there are stretches of boulders to climb through but nothing difficult.   The snow was almost completely melted out except for the last 30' or so before the summit.   Today was cloudy on the summit but still nice views over to Granite, Silver Mtn, and as far east as Stuart.   Annette Lake is also visible in the drainage to the east.

A nice workout within easy access of Seattle.
