We read a trip report that the trail was snow free and - our bad - decided not to carry microspikes. The trail is in good condition although there are some downed trees that are soot covered which automatically transfers to your hands. We were about 1/2 mile past the junction for the Goat Lakes Trail when there was snow on the trail that we felt required at least microspikes to cross. We looked for a work around and decided to turn around instead.
The fire last year laid waste to the trees along the trail which leaves you exposed about twice as much as it used to. There is also no longer signage directing you to avoid the old Mountaineers trail and if you weren't familiar with the trail that could be confusing as well.
