I left the rain in Seattle and drove through more rain while heading to Skagit Valley. Once at the slough, the sun was out. It was warm and dry.
Spring has landed at Wiley Slough. The grasses are tall and springtime green. Flowers are blooming. Butterflies and birds are very active. I saw gold finches, waxwings, hummingbirds and a number of other birds. There was a mother duck with at least 9 ducklings. Swallows are feeding their babies in some of the boxes and they are soaring everywhere to eat insects. Of course there are the resident eagles perched up high in tree limbs.
I saw only a couple of people and it was very quiet today. This is an easy stroll along a slough that changes dramatically with the seasons. Today was definitely a spring day. The flowers were surprisingly varied and pretty.
Before heading home I drove a few miles to Snow Goose Produce. I picked up a few items (local strawberries included). There were folks eating big ice cream comes that looked delicious. It was certainly warm enough to enjoy such a treat. When the weather is suboptimal in the mountains, how can you go wrong with a day in Skagit Valley!
This easy walk is accessible by taking exit 221 off of I-5, hitting a roundabout and proceeding to Fir Island Road and taking a left onto Wiley Slough Road.
