Trip Report

Ancient Lakes — Saturday, Jun. 23, 2018

Central Washington > Potholes Region

We had a great overnight at Ancient lakes. From the backpacking parking lot, you will want to stay left. I read a trip report that said stay right and we ended up going on a little detour to the other side of the canyon. I realized they were starting at the day hike parking lot. It made for a nice loop though. We did see one snake and heard another rattle at us as we were hiking. There were a lot of bugs/bees but they stayed their distance for the most part. A few biting flies... Make sure to pack in more water then you think you will need, especially if it is hot. The nice thing is, you are only about a 45 minute walk to your car if you need to go back and get your stash of water you left there for the next day. :)

There are multiple camp spots to choose from. No fires allowed after June 1st. It was a warm night, didn't use the rain fly. Overall it was a great little overnighter. Not sure if I would want to be out there when it was much warmer. Shade can be hard to find to escape the sun.

Did you find this trip report helpful?
