Lake Whatcom Park - Chanterelle Trail — Wednesday, Jul. 18, 2018

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
Lake Whatcom from the Chanterelle Trail

We got to the trailhead at about 8:45 and the upper lot was completely full. There were only a few spots left in the lower lot, but keep in mind that this is parking for two separate trails. It was also Trek for Treasure, so there were a lot of teams hiking for that.

The trail is so well done, well maintained, and a pretty easy hike. There’s some elevation gain, but the switchbacks really help negate some of the steep climbing. The trail is nice and wide with very little in the way of rocks or roots. It crosses a logging road several times, and then finally makes its way to the top where there are great views of Lake Whatcom.

I felt like the trail description was a tad misleading in its description of the views. While it’s probably one of the best views you can get of Lake Whatcom, you can’t see Puget Sound much at all. It’s more of a peek-a-boo look and you only know what you’re looking at if you’re from around here. That being said, the view was awesome, I just had different expectations based on the website description. The woods are nice too, and we saw an owl on our descent.

We had our dog with us and the wide trail made that really easy to keep her beside us. We saw other dogs on the trail too, but I wish more of them would have been on leashes. One dog, who was leashed, was having a very difficult time not lashing out at other dogs. His owners handled it well, but it’s a good reminder. Please remember that dogs are required to be on leashes and even if your dog is friendly and harmless, the dog it is approaching may not be.

Great trail for a hike or a trail run, and I’m sure we will be back!

Our owl friend that asked us to leave :)
