Lily and Lizard Lake Loop, Lily Lake Loop — Monday, Jul. 23, 2018

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
Lily Lake Camp

I Started my hike Monday evening around 6P.M. to Lilly for a night in the woods under the stars. Took me around an hour and a half to make my way with a full pack on my back, the trail was in great shape only one small tree over the trail close to the start of the Lily and Lizard trail from the upper parking lot. All the little water crossings along this section have pretty much dried up to a small trickle or nonexistent at this time. Got up to the lake around 7:30 and set up camp. I was planning on heading up to Oyster Dome about half a mile away from Lily for a glimpse but decided to just take it easy at camp, it was a hot hill climb for me on this day close to 80's in the tree line. The trail has been neglected by trail users, it is littered with toilet paper right next to and in some cases on the trail, if nature calls and your on the trail, a stick can easily poke TP down into the soft soil so that it isn't in view of others enjoying the trails on Blanchard, please and thank you in advance for your trail etiquette. The night at Lily Lake was very quiet compared to last time I stayed here, then frogs crocking all night and into the day when we had left in April, this time not a single thing except for some small water splashes not even an owl rather eerily quiet I thought. Had a group of three males visit Lily Lake around 10:30 for a moon light night hike, it was sure bright. No others that I know of where staying at Lily, I had the place all to myself. Keep in mind for those hiking to the Oyster Dome that Samish Bay trail is closed so if your coming from Chuckanut Drive or the Samish Overlook you will have to take the Larry Reed trail to Max's shortcut to get to the Oyster Dome for up to 3 weeks due to logging in the area, so keep that in mind a 5 mile round trip will be closer to 9.2 starting at Chuckanut Drive. In the morning drove a couple miles up to Samish Overlook for a gander with a similar view to that of the Oyster Dome overlook. Take a hike and enjoy.
