Trip Report

Baldy — Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast
Baldy & Gray Wolf

Reached the Upper Dungeness trailhead just after 11am. 10+ cars in the huge parking lot. FR-2860 had some washboarding and potholes, but nothing too bad (yet).

Followed the Dungeness River Trail to the Lower Maynard Burn Trail (signed). Took a right upon reaching a decommissioned road. Some brushing out had been done here, but my pants were soaked by the time I reached the bottom of the Upper Maynard Burn trail (not signed, but flagged). The pants dried real fast one I started uphill... Crossed the decommissioned road again a bit further up. While steep, the tread of the trail was excellent, and not slippery (as it might be when drier). There were a handful of mid-sized blowdowns, only one of which was at a slightly inconvenient height. Couple of inches of intermittent, completely unconsolidated snow above 6,200.

On the way down, I followed the upper decommissioned road directly back to the Lower Maynard Burn Trail, which was a bit faster and easier. This is also the route described in the hiking guide, if I had bothered to read it more carefully.

Encountered several parties, but only one party beyond the Dungeness River Trail.

No fall colors or berries, but lots of mushrooms (at lower elevations).
