Trip Report

Four Stream, Staircase Rapids — Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
Big Beaver

The unpaved part of the road to Staircase had a rock slide, but there was enough space for cars to get through. Other than that, plenty of small potholes, and some light washboarding. Between the day use and the ranger station parking lot, there were about half a dozen cars when we arrived at 11am.

Hiked the Staircase Rapids Loop clockwise, with a side trip to the Four Stream crossing. Even with all the recent rain, the trails were in great condition, at least up to the (signed) "Big Beaver" viewpoint on the Four Stream trail. Beyond that, there were two places that required careful climbing over slippery rocks, and one or two areas where the trail was being undermined by the river.

At Four Stream, a faint trail continued up along the stream; didn't investigate if that lead to a place where the stream could be crossed without wet feet.

Encountered only a couple of parties today, all on the loop trail.
