Clear skies on a winter day, I just had to take advantage of it, and I knew the perfect place - Summit Lake. The road to the trailhead is rough to say the least. No major potholes but very rocky. I did see signs near the beginning that said target shooting was not allowed which is a change from years past. About two miles from the trailhead the road gets snow covered and was about 4 inches deep on the road. I'm glad I had 4WD and high clearance.
Once on the trail, it was like a magical land, snow covering everything. I love these hikes in the winter with the white snow covering everything. The trail is covered in snow the whole way. anywhere from an inch in places to about a foot towards the top. I took snowshoes but didn't need them. Others had blazed a trail that was easy enough to follow. In the lower parts of the trail, it was icy and I would recommend traction gear.
Made it to the top above Summit Lake with no real difficulty. Clear skies allow for amazing views all around. Not a soul on the trail that day. Absolutely quiet. I could have stayed up there longer but the days don't last long and I had to get home.
Twin Lake and Coplay Lake were both frozen over but Summit Lake was only partially frozen. Snow in places were like tiny razor thin shards of ice. very cool looking.
