Church Mountain — Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
Church Mountain

The road to the trail head is snow free, but is blocked by a blow-down approximately 1/3rd of a mile before the trail head.

There was no snow on the trail until approximately 3,900 feet, but there are lots of blow-downs blocking the trail that you have to negotiate.

We explored the meadows, but did not make the final push to the summit due to avalanche danger. We didn’t see any avalanches, but the upper slopes looked treacherous and potentially unstable (lots of roller balls, cornices, etc…).

The weather was warm and the snow was soft. Mikrospikes, snowshoes, and trekking poles were used for safer and more enjoyable snow travel.
