Trip Report

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area

This was a great family hike thanks to Craig Romano who posted a recent segment he did on King 5 Evening.  I highly recommend his guidebooks.  I think you could call it Taylor Creek in Dead Horse Canyon at Lakeridge Park but that doesn't sound quite as exciting.

Located in south Seattle it's a beautiful close-by slice of nature.  The trail climbs the canyon wall along the creek, gaining elevation over several sets of stepped areas on the first part of the trail.  Once it levels out it crosses several small side streams and a long bridge across a larger one.  Then where it reaches a bench the trail splits creating a lollipop loop that crosses two large bridges that provide great views down to the creek.  At the half way point of the loop a short trail takes off to the creek and an old foundation it crosses.  There's a few bricks that you can use to cross the creek to a rough trail that we didn't go on.

There are magnificent tall Ceders, Big Leaf Maples and Alders.  The whole canyon is covered in ferns and moss.  An owl hooted loudly for a while but we couldn't locate it.  Taylor Creek is one of only three Seattle creeks that flow year round.  The trail length is one mile.

Did you find this trip report helpful?

I find that an interesting tidbit. Do you know the other two?

Fauntleroy and Thornton. While I'd like to be considered the leading expert on seasonal creeks I must admit my old friend Google saved me again. I like to note these facts to the kids when I find them to hone their curiosity though it often brings a groan and the reprieve, 'No more facts Dad!'

Does anyone know if the following is true?

A friend told me something that saddened me quite a lot. Do you happen to know if it's true that Seattle Parks and Recreation is planning to basically destroy Dead Horse Canyon in Rainier Beach? I heard that they are going to put a road in this lovely, seemingly unspoiled little area and build dams (instead of just raising a culvert for salmon that is a bit too high).

Thanks for any information you might have.

That would be sad indeed. I've not heard this, but I would think the environmental impact would be too high for approval. A search online didn't bring anything up. I hope this is mistaken information.

I did find this: https://www.seattle.gov/utilities/neighborhood-projects/taylor-creek. So it seems it's an SPU project. Hopefully won't be as bad as my friend made it sound. There are documents there I've yet to read, and a place for public comment.
