North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Lake Kelcema Snowshoe by kcrawford16
Lucky enough to get out in the "Snow-pocalyspe" we headed for Deer Creek Rd and Kelcema Lake. The plows were out before us and the Mtn Loop Highway was snowy but driveable. We were 1 of 3 groups (5 people in total) hiking the road today, but saw plenty of sledders on the way back at the winter play area. The road is slick and covered with loose new snow so we parked at the bottom in the winter play area and hiked up. We saw about six to seven inches on most of the road and needed snowshoes after the first washout. Even as a road hike this one still has some decent views and the sun even poked its head out for a little while so we were quite warm! As a not quite related note, we didn't see the parking lot for Lake 22 overflowing with cars which was somewhat surprising. If you're out to do that hike or Pilchuck and the parking lots are full - try Kelcema Lake! It's beautiful and a wonderful day hike!!
