I know, I know - What in the heck am I doing back HERE ?! Long story short : I'll do any hike once - and sometimes twice, just to be sure. This was one of those just to be sure hikes.
So after an easy day at Lord Hill yesterday, I needed to stretch my legs a bit. On to WTA I go, and sure enough, looks like all the trails are still snowed under. Seems everyone was either sliding down the ice, or post-holing up to their crotch. Not to mention tree bombs and avalanches! No thanks. I can wait. So that means another lowland forest road hike - a.k.a. "crunchy gravel road". On to Google I go...
Just like before, I kept flying over Lake Roesiger - and that big ol' chunk of green. I mean, that's the same size as Lord Hill! There's gotta be something interesting there, right? I should probably check it out again - just to be sure.
Just to clarify - this is not the pretty little park by the lake we're talkin' about. That's a great picnic spot! Nice little beach, restrooms, and a short trail in the trees. No, this is across the road - through the haunted campground, and into the forest...
O.K., it's probably not haunted - it just looks like it. At one time you could camp here; and all the tables and firepits remain, covered in moss and debris. Looks like one of those post-apocalyptic scenes. If you stop by the actual park, it's worth crossing the road to check it out.
Anyway, I had made up my mind not to repeat the clear-cut fiasco of last time. Best to stick to the trees. The area just above the campground was mature forest, and by stringing the game trails together, pretty easy going. Soon popped out on the gravel road. (Oh yeah, this area is tagged to be logged - so that will be that. Not much of a Park, eh?)
Alright, let's speed this up : Walked the main crunchy gravel road all the way to the south end, through spindly forest. Absolutely nothing of interest, and I turned around when the gunfire got too loud. Walked all the way back to the north end, and explored the clearcuts. Nice view of Pilchuck at the top. (well, if you can block out the clearcut tree carnage in the foreground.) All the side roads and trails ended at private property, and there aren't any interesting features to explore. So yeah - this place sucks! I don't think it even rates a "Meh".
I mean, I tried to like it - I really did. But even if they did make some trails in there - it would still be boring. There is just nothing to see. I suppose if they keep cutting the trees down, they'll eventually end up with a great view ... and maybe then I'll be back...

I have gone up the backside via the DNR former fire road 1/2mi or so off of Monroe Log Camp Rd (before the camps) via bikes. It is a smooth and fun road to bomb down but the top was absolutely disappointing - the one spot with decent views was a stump at the north end where you popped out.

I nicknamed it Falcon Ridge because there was a development named Falcon Ridge was slated to be there before it was bought as a park

yeah, I'm sure there's some confusion when people are looking for info on the actual Park. I sometimes have to just pick the nearest TH from WTA's list. (Marckworth Forest comes up as Issaquah Alps, but I go in just across the river from Sultan) Wish there was a way to specify where you really went.
Falcon Ridge does sound like a good nickname, and I think it lends itself better as a bike park than hiking - it's pretty boring.
