Anacortes Community Forest Lands - Little Cranberry Lake, Anacortes Community Forest Lands - Big Beaver Pond — Saturday, Apr. 13, 2019

Puget Sound and Islands > Whidbey Island
Big Beaver Pond

Plenty of parking at the trailhead off "A" Ave at 11am.

Hiked a counter-clockwise loop around Big Beaver Pond and Little Beaver Pond.

No obstacles on the trails other than a few slightly muddy spots. Trails were marked with numbers at every junction, so this map was useful.

Only encountered a couple of people on the trail, all on foot.

Wildflowers: Calypso Orchids, lots of Skunk Cabbage.

We did this loop on Thursday, but unfortunately didn't see the calypso orchid so must have done a variation of the loop. Did you walk around Little Cranberry Lake?

Saw one Calypso orchid on trail #123 near Big Beaver Pond (see https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/22450179), but most were along #115 (near the junction with #116).

Calypso Orchids are one of my favorite spring flowers. We hiked only a short section on the 115 so that must be why we missed the calypsos there, but we were on the 123. Must have blinked as we passed it! :)! Happy hiking to you and your wife!

The beavers do create barriers and they are fun to watch some evenings in the fall.
