Perfect conditions on Mount Saint Helens yesterday! We started around 3:30 am and the snow was super firm. I opted to put my crampons on about a quarter mile after chocolate falls. A lot of other parties put them on with us while some waited until later (or not at all) depends on your comfort level! I got to the summit around 10 am and waited for other members of our group. We were up there for about an hour. By that time the snow had softened up considerably and we were able to glissade down past the weather station a considerable distance. I saw a lot of people start glissading with crampons still on...DON'T DO THIS!! You are going to break an ankle. I tried to yell and warn them, thankfully a skier stopped to tell them and they took their crampons of before hurting themselves. Also when glissading make sure you are on the right trail, there are glissade chutes on the summit that lead down the monitor ridge trail, not worm flows. I used the maps on my GPS watch and phone to make sure I am on the right track (also just pay attention to where the climbers are and you should be good!) We got back to our car around 3 pm to start the long drive back to Seattle.

Did you camp the night prior? If so, where? Was the snow level all the way down to marble mtn park? Thanks!

We slept in our cars at the Marble Mount sno-park. We saw some people camped at chocolate falls on our way up though! There was snow all the way to the park, but it was getting a little patchy the last mile or so of the trail. Hope this helps!

Do you know if the Climbers’ Bivouac trailhead is open or is this the best route currently?

It was not open when I was there. Last year it opened a day after I climbed Helens around June 10th so my guess is it might be a little longer before it opens this year!
