This is an easy walk for the first few miles, but as you wander up the Waptus River the trail becomes harder to find. It was covered in snow, sometimes heavy, in places, and there were innumerable slivers of creek crossing the path. Most of the crossings have enough downed logs or rocks that you can skip across freely, but we had to take off our boots and wade at least once.
There are many wildflowers, a few non-biting mosquitoes, and an assortment of rodents along the way. We saw footprints in the snow, probably a deer or an elk, and a few faded prints of something bigger (big cat? bear?) but otherwise it was just a peaceful walk up the creek.
We wanted to go all the way to Waptus Lake, but we got tired of the creek crossings, and we lost our way on the snow a few times, so we turned around a few miles short of the lake.
This should be a great hike in a few weeks.
