We hiked from the Herrick Road trailhead (which I think is the only one accessible now?) and a few notes of difference we saw from this listing, which I think is based on the original trailhead. (Note the coordinates on the map on this listing still point you to the old trailhead. If you're map-apping your way, just follow them right up until the last turn, then skip going on to the Olympic Hot Springs Road turn and follow the written directions instead.)
We didn't see anything that required a Natl Park Pass at the three-car parking spot at the trailhead, and I wonder if that is only accurate to the original trailhead. I just tried calling the visitor center to confirm, but couldn't get through. I'll just say if you are not planning on getting a pass for other reasons for the year, I would call first to make sure, as it is a pricey pass. (I got mine without checking and now wish I had, but at least it goes to a good cause!)
From the trailhead, it is signed that it's 3.3 miles to the campground, making round-trip 6.6, just a little difference as you plan your day.
We turned back at 2.25 miles, and I registered 750 feet of elevation gain for this abbreviated hike. Not sure if the last mile has as much up and down, and for hikers who are accustomed to elevation gain, probably won't be an issue. But if you are a person with any limitations and select hikes based on max gain, you might want to keep in mind the hike from this trailhead might be more than you would expect from the 500 gain over 6 miles listed.
So with those disclaimers out of the way! It's a very lovely hike, was peaceful and not busy at all despite the sunny day. I recommend and hope to get back out again this season to enjoy the whole route!
