When they say this hike starts out steep - take them at their word! Very steep in those first couple of miles up to the meadows - and from there, well, it's still steep! If you're hiking with a dog note there is no water until you get up to the meadows - about 2 miles - that's a long stretch for the pup on a hot day with no water. Ours was supplemented and even still she drank and drank when we got to the small creek.
We made it to the meadows and wildflowers and they were awesome. The trail is narrow, doesn't see a ton of traffic (only 2 cars today plus ours) and the steepest sections do have some stairs built into them. It's just the constant uphill slog that got to us after a while. No respite in a flattish section before beginning another... Nope, just up, up, up.
