The mountains were mostly shrouded in clouds, with occasional glimpses of glaciers and peaks -- but the views were still amazing. And the berries are plentiful and delicious, especially on the sunnier slopes. They're starting to display some fall color, but the show hasn't quite started yet.
Still no suspension bridge over the creek, and we reached the crossing fairly late in the day so it was flowing fast and deep. It took us a while to find a suitable crossing spot, quite a ways upstream. Even then, it felt pretty sketchy -- thigh deep, ice cold, uncertain footing -- and we lacked water shoes or poles, both of which would have been very welcome. Probably not life-threatening at the spot we picked, but I did worry about backpack, phone/camera, boots, etc. And I wouldn't have wanted to have a dog with me. From previous reports, it sounds like there are times when it's not quite as bad -- but I recommend being prepared for this crossing! Definitely do the loop clockwise, so if you decide not to cross, you can still enjoy Park Butte and Railroad Grade.
This is a hike I've had on my list for a long time, and it did not disappoint.
