I headed to this hike knowing that the weather would be decent and hoping to find fall colors. The weather was great. Sunny and warm with a nice gentle breeze. More time is needed for the fall foliage to come in. The hills are brown and dry (typical for this area). Depending on which trail you take, you'll see bright yellow and green plants and trees, red berries or various shades of brown and dried arrangements of past prime wildflowers. If you don't like the desert, you probably won't like this hike. I spent most of my time on the lower trails looking at the contrast of colors and enjoying the different birds flying about. When I decided to go to a higher elevation, I walked along Cowiche West trail. In a few weeks, not only will this trail display more fall colors, the trees along the roads and rivers in Yakima will be much more vibrant.

The desert holds a beauty all it's own, you just have to know the right time to see it. :-)

I agree. I love desert hikes. I think there is a lot to see in them but I know there are other folks who prefer the forest. I hike both types of locations and that keeps me happy all year long!
