We had a wonderful day hiking up to Flapjack Lakes today. This hike may be my favorite Pacific Northwest hike, mile for mile. It is not for the faint of heart. At places it is extremely steep and strenuous, and the footing is uncertain in places, requiring careful attention. The reward, however, is sweet, as the pictures will show. My brother tracked the hike at 16.4 miles and over 42,472 steps. It took us three and a half hours each direction, moving at a good clip. I provided a link to an earlier report of mine on this hike below which has more information on the trail.
It's unusual for this spot to be accessible so late in the season. The lake was freezing over in the shallow areas. I assume that Flapjack Lakes will be accessible within the next few days, but soon it will be snowed in for the season. The trail was in good condition, only one small tree down right at the beginning of the hike, and there was no ice on the trail except in one spot just below the lakes. These conditions could change quickly at this time of year, so be careful.
We were blessed with absolutely perfect weather today, maybe the best I have ever had hiking, and only saw two other people on the trail all day. If you want to see this spot before winter closes it in you probably have a day or two left for sure with conditions like they were for us. Happy Hiking!
