Hiked to Camp Muir on 6/20/22 to try to escape the clouds and thankfully we did! Started from Paradise at 8:30 am, made it out of the clouds around Panorama Point. Snow was soft at Paradise even in the morning, got a little crustier as we went up in elevation, then things started softening & heating up as the sun hit the snowfields in the late morning. I definitely recommend starting early so that you're not ascending in the afternoon sun, it looked brutally warm.... Sunscreen, glacier glasses, gaiters, poles, spikes, GPS/downloaded route, and lots of water were necessities! Didn't use snowshoes, but they probably would have been nice on the way down.

Were you fine with microspikes or did you need crampons?

We were okay with microspikes, however there were other groups with crampons. The snowfields aren’t too steep and the snow was so soft towards noon that I can’t imagine crampons were very effective. Hope that helps!
