Cape Alava Loop (Ozette Triangle) — Monday, Jun. 20, 2022

Olympic Peninsula > Pacific Coast
solstice eve from the campsite

Did this loop as an overnight, heading counter-clockwise and camping at Cape Alava. The trails through the forest both to Cape Alava and from Sand Point are in great condition, and it looks like the boardwalk has had some recent repairs. I started my hike towards the end of the day and the campgrounds were pretty full - I ended up finding a spot on the north end. The NPS map of the grounds showed a few campsites north of where I was but they were either non-existent or inaccessible due to overgrowth. The northern privy is also in bad condition compared to the one closer to the trail (door doesn't close, structure falling apart, super moldy, and the ground is collapsing underneath and around it). The trail from Cape Alava to Sand Point is mostly on very loose rocks/gravel and sand or through the tide pools, so plan to go slower than your usual speed. Going at low tide made it a lot easier to navigate. There were a good number of families at Cape Alava, and day hikers doing the full loop, but I also had a lot of solitude on the trail, particularly from Sand Point heading back to the trail head.

walking through tide pools
really lovely boardwalk :)
