Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West
Old railroad grade

Hiked to the middle falls on an early Tuesday morning with my golden retriever Ginger. There are terrific bathroom facilities at the trailhead, with flush toilets and running water. There are 2 parralel trails near the start. The “woody trail”, which follows the river, and the longer, gentler “old railroad grade” trail, which cuts into the forest. Both eventually meet up later on. For some reason unknown to man, I missed the big sign pointing to the “woody trail”, and ended up on the “old railroad grade” trail! This offered 2.5 miles of quiet contemplation in a stoic, grand forest, broken only by one other hiker.  The trail is well marked, with big, easy to read mileage markers every half mile, benches to sit on, and big signs. After meeting up again with the “woody trail”, I made my way to the middle falls, and at 7:45 am, was the only one there. The falls were magnificent, absolutely roaring. Not wanting to run the gamut of incoming hikers, I choose the “old railroad grade” for a trip back, and returned to the parking lot at 9:30 am. The parking lot was about 1/3 full. All in all, it was a peaceful, contemplative journey.

Awesome bridge
Meandering stream
Nifty mileage marker
