We hiked up to Camp Handy. What a lovely hike! A steep uphill to start, but the rest is very gradual. The river was flowing and was absolutely beautiful the whole way. The mountains were socked in at Camp Handy, but it was still so pretty up there. Much of the second half of the trail up was simply pristine underfoot, with few rocks and roots.
The road to get there was rough in parts, but didn't give us any problems; just look out for and go around the potholes. Honestly, it was in better shape than many of the others I've been on. As others have said, be sure to pay attention at the forks in the road--2880 to 2870 on the way up.
When we arrived at 8:30, we were shocked to find the parking lots near overflowing, since this trail is usually less traveled, but it turned out to be WTA trail crews. Thank you to the awesome trail volunteers! I think they were working on other trails, since we only saw three volunteers on this trail. The trail itself was pretty empty. We passed maybe 10 others.

Were there rhododendrons in bloom along this trail?

we're planning on going this weekend but just had to take our jeep to the shop. Could we make it to the trailhead in a sedan?

Someone in our group did it in a Prius. Just go slow and go around the pot holes.
