Trip Report

Thompson Point — Tuesday, Jul. 12, 2022

Snoqualmie Region > North Bend Area
Upper logging road.

Day hiked to Thompson Point to do some recon on routes out to Revolution.

Trail to Thompson Point was in much better condition than last time I was out there. There is less slide alder on the first quarter mile of the old logging road, as well as less pooled water to negotiate with.

There is only one or two patches of snow (10'x10' or so) prior to the cabin site. Bugs became an annoyance once reaching the cabin site, and remained that way to the upper part of the logging road headed to Revolution's ridge.

Does anyone have a picture of the crux/ down-climb on the ridge to Revolution? The only photo I can find is from ngie's report from November. Also looked at the bushwack route taken by kidzwonthike and others, which follows the lower logging road into a steep bushwack under the crux. That route looks terrifying. So I'm curious what the ridge looks like if others have taken that route to avoid it. Planning on hiking out there in August with some family, any help/ suggestions are appreciated.

Gaia clocked the Thompson Point hike at 12.4mi RT / 4120 ft. elevation gain. Link below.

Lower logging road and Defiance.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I took the ridge to Revolution a few days ago and found it surprisingly easy and quick even though I was tired at that point(relentless flies swarming around Thompson Point so I wasn't able to take much of a break). I'm new to these sorts of hikes or any sort of scrambling(less than a year). I have become addicted and gained a lot of experience the past year though.

The ridge features a few ups and downs and there are some cliffy rocks with a little bit of scrambling, but the exposure seemed very minimal. If the rope wasn't tied there, I think it would be easy to step up and down that rock as long as it's dry. It's two or three moves with a solid tree to step on, less than ten feet high iirc. Moot point because there is a helpful, solid rope to utilize.

I don't see why people would choose to avoid the fun ridge with that steep traverse after the short spur road ends. I probably did the lower traverse totally wrong. Entered at the wrong point(it was absolutely horrible and dangerous) and was generally too high up the slope going across the lower cliff bands rather than descending below them.

I scoured some trip reports on NWHikers looking for a picture of the 'crux'. Can't seem to find any. I see multiple reports mentioning taking the lower traverse up and the ridge down. Including kidz won't hike's report on here.

Thanks for the thorough response! Sounds like the ridge route is the way to go.

You’re tearing it up for under a year, all the reports are much appreciated as well. Cheers
