Of hundreds of Washington's trails I have enjoyed, this is my new favorite. Spectacular scenery at every turn. Incredible history and geology. And in our own back yard. We had prepared for this trip by reading a superb book that describes the background, personalities and details associated with Mt. St. Helens: Eruption by Steve Olson. And our group included Steve and Lynn Olson so we enjoyed a walking narration describing one of our planet's very special places.
NOTE: Despite all trip reports and hike descriptions that described water at Pumice Camp - there was no water this time of year! So for the first time, I had the pleasure (not so much) of experiencing a very dry evening, night and morning.
First full day: Having camped at June Lake (1.6 miles from TH), we hiked to the excellent campsite in old growth forest on a side trail .4 miles south of South Toutle River in 9.7 hours. Most challenging day due to lava field crossings, fixed ropes, and elevation gain and loss. Views of four volcanos!
Second day: S. Fork Toutle to Ape Trail Camp in 11 hours (due to searching for water at Pumice Camp). Should have stocked up at "oasis spring" east of Loowit falls before heading over Windy Pass or at tiny stream on south side of pass. Day of ever-changing vistas. Spirit Lake glistened. Meadows gushed. Pumice plains. Route finding was easy, stream crossings fine, ledges OK.
Third day: Ape Trail Camp to cars in 4 1/2 hours including a long water and breakfast break at S. Fork Muddy River under the waterfall. Brilliant sunrise. Huckleberries galore.
Superb post-hike feast at Woodland Country Store (BLTA and Eruption)
Good description of water sources: trip report from 8/11/21.
Must read or listen to audio: Eruption by Steve Olson
Final note: Sincere thanks to hiking partners Jared, Barb E, Sally K, Ralph G, and Lynn and Steve Olson.

Such a great trip report, and how cool to do that hike with the author of 'Eruption'!
