Tieton River Nature Trail — Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022

Central Washington > Yakima
Suspension bridge from far side

I have to mention that this trail is called the Tieton Nature Trail other places and it took me a while to find it on the WTA website. We parked at the Oak Creek Wildlife Recreation Area. The turn-off sign says Historical Marker, but we didn't see one. The indoor restrooms were not open, but there are two pit toilets. We started off about 9:15, the sun not quite over the cliffs.

It is mostly an open easy trail, later entering a nice woodsy area. We enjoyed the views of the impressive Royal Columns, hills in other directions and views and sounds of the river. You can often see and hear the highway, but it is not very bothersome, especially where the river is loud. There were a few other hikers and joggers.

My daughter was brave enough to cross the suspension bridge, but I was not. The upper cables are almost too high to reach at the beginning, and made it difficult to feel confident. We walked another half mile or so beyond, but due to time constraints, had to turn around. Fall colors are starting to show, and will no doubt be in full glory in a few weeks. We saw a small lizard, Stellar jays, woodpeckers, but no snakes.
